Liam Shortall
Liam Shortall started playing trombone at the age of eight while still at primary school. At the age of ten, after listening to the two Jazz trombonists' J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding album "The Great Kai and J.J.", he joined a local jazz band in Dumfries. Three years later he joined the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra (TSYJO) and The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland (NYJoS), both of which he has toured multiple times with across the country. Tour locations include places such as Skye, Lewis, Shetland and London- where he was involved in the Essentially Ellington Competition when the TYSJO played in front of Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra. Liam has also been involved in two separate ensembles who won the Under 19's Yamaha Youth Jazz Competition at Cheltenham Jazz Festival two years in a row. Liam now studies a Bachelor degree in Jazz Trombone at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
