Born in Greenock, Scotland, John began to develop an interest in music through his father around the age of 7 when he received his first guitar for Christmas. After going through a phase of listening to rock bands such as Iron Maiden and Metallica, John turned his interests to the music of Frank Zappa and then eventually jazz in early high school. John, after further venturing into jazz, joined the Strathclyde Youth Jazz Orchestra while in fourth year of high school. Through this band and the connections made there, he soon experienced playing and listening to live jazz more than ever before. This band also gave John the opportunity to play at several national concert band festivals as well as two gigs at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2010.Through his school career John won 4 awards as part of the Inverclyde music festival as well as The Inverclyde Young Musician of the Year award in 2007, and since then has joined the jazz course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. John is going to continue playing around Scotland and aims to establish a name for himself in the Scottish jazz scene.
