"What do a Zappa-worshipping Glaswegian, classically trained Frenchman, bass-slapping Londoner, trombone-blower from Dumphries, and a self-taught 19 year old drummer from Aberdeen all have in common? If you guessed they all formed the contemporary jazz group Random Articles, then you may have a future in fortune telling....
Though they all come from different walks of life, the members of Random Articles create a sound that is truly their own. All 5 members met while studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and have been playing together since 2013. Included in this 5-piece, in order of their ambiguous descriptions from the paragraph above, are John Patton (guitar) Samuel Tessier (tenor sax) David Bowden (bass) Liam Shortall (trumpet) and Finlay Adam Jamieson (drums).
In an age where “jazz” is a much-forgotten genre among young people, Random Articles seek to view jazz through a more contemporary viewpoint, making their sound both comforting for jazz purists and accessible for those new to the genre. The result is a sound that is modern, yet firmly rooted with influences from jazz's past.
While the group is relatively new, they have been wasting no time getting recognized locally in Glasgow, thanks to residencies at Slouch Bar on Tuesdays and The Butterfly and the Pig on Wednesdays. With their forthcoming self-titled EP set to be released in early May 2014, you'd be a fool not to keep Random Articles on your radar, for they are without a doubt one of the most promising young jazz groups of our times.
